EPISODE #92 – On this Wonderful Women Wednesday, we continue to acknowledge Women’s History Month and since today is the last day, I want to honor the 2021 NAACP Image Award Recipient of the first Social Justice Impact Award - Stacey Abrams. Most people first heard of Stacey when she ran to be the first black woman governor in the history of the United States, representing the State of Georgia. Through her experience in this race, voter suppression was exposed and her launching of Fair Fight Action was born. I want to talk about her background and how it all began. Stacey is the second of six siblings (one of her sisters is U.S. District Judge Leslie Abrams Gardner). She was born to Robert and Carolyn Abrams in Madison, Wisconsin, and raised in Gulfport, Mississippi. The family moved to Atlanta, Georgia, where her parents pursued graduate degrees at Emory Universityand later became Methodist Ministers. She attended Avondale High School in DeKalb County, Georgia, graduating as valedictorian, and where she was selected for a Telluride Association Summer Program. While in high school, she was hired as a typist for a congressional campaign, and at age 17, she was hired as a speechwriter based on the edits she had made while typing. In 1995, Stacey earned a Bachelor of Arts in interdisciplinary studies (political science, economics, and sociology) from Spelman College, magna cum laude. While in college, she worked in the youth services department in the office of Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson. She later interned at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). As a freshman in 1992, Stacey took part in a protest on the steps of the Georgia Capitol, during which she joined in burning the state flag. At that time, Georgia's state flag incorporated the Confederate battle flag, which had been added to the state flag in 1956 as an anti-civil rights movement action. The flag was designed by Southern Democrat John Sammons Bell, an attorney and chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia who was an outspoken supporter of segregation. As a Harry S. Truman Scholar, Abrams studied public policy at the University of Texas at Austin's LBJ School of Public Affairs, where she earned a Master of Public Affairs degree in 1998. In 1999, she earned a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School. DID YOU KNOW THAT STACEY ALSO IS A ROMANCE NOVEL AUTHOR UNDER THE NAME SELENA MONTGOMERY? WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY? EPISODE #90 – On this Wonderful Women Wednesday, we continue to acknowledge Women’s History Month and celebrate Founder & CEO of Slutty Vegan Pinky Cole. Covid19 is making people re-evaluate healthy eating, and like many of you, I want to eat healthy, with a tasty alternative. Pinky’s restaurant has taken vegan burgers to another level, people from all around the world, especially celebrities, drop by to try these burgers. Her vegan burgers have introduced many to the vegan lifestyle and many found it easier to transition due to her tasty choices. She is so much more than that though. She is also known as a philanthropist – she and fellow Clark Atlanta graduate Stacy Lee paid off the debts of 30 Clark Atlanta University seniors in September 2019. She also feed front line workers during the pandemic but got trolled online by racist for reaching out to and helping Rayshard Brooks family, who was shot by Atlanta Police while sitting in his car at Wendy’s. Thanks to her, his family received a car, full college scholarships for his kids to her alma mater Clark Atlanta University, life insurance and more. At one time, Pinky worked as a casting director for Iyanla Fix My Life. Before coming to Atlanta and creating Slutty Vegan, she had a Jamaican and American Restaurant in Harlem, New York. EPISODE #88 – On this Wonderful Winning Women Wednesday, we continue to acknowledge Women’s History Month and celebrate Winning Women of the 2021 Grammy Awards. Beyoncé, Megan Thee Stallion, Billie Eilish, H.E.R., Taylor Swift, and Brittany Howard. Taylor Swift made history by being the first woman ever to win Album of the Year three (3) times. Beyoncé made history by winning the most Grammy awards by any artist, male and female. The New York Times questions if CBS used double standards with the word gushy with Cardi B and Megan’s performance, but aired a sanitary napkin commercial with gush in it during the Grammys. EPISODE #87 This Fantastic Fellas Friday we celebrate Bryant T. Marks, Ph.D., Founder and Chief Equity Officer of the National Training Institute on Race and Equity and is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Morehouse College. Dr. Marks did a special entitled Hidden Bias of Good People, and I thought it would be a road map to uniting America. We need to help everyone recognize the biases we have in general, not always for racial reasons, but also because of our environments. ARE YOU BIAS? Bias is prejudice in favor of or against one thing, person or group compared with another, usually in a way considered to be unfair. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY? EPISODE #84 This Fantastic Fun Fellas and Female Friday we celebrate COMING TO AMERICA 2. We open the episode with a rare interview of Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall on Jimmy Kimmel Live and then play the smash hit off the soundtrack called “I’m A King” by Bobby Sessions and Megan Thee Stallion. Vulture.com says Megan Thee Stallion is the Real Royalty On New Song as she states she is a Queen, and says Coming 2 America Is Both Figuratively and Literally a Nostalgia Trip 33 years later. They did an amazing job adding younger stars in the movie, as well as an all-star cast of comedians (Lunelle, Tracy Morgan, Leslie Jones, Rodney Perry, Jermaine Fowler, SNL’s Colin Jost, and Louie Anderson) to keep you laughing throughout the movie. Vulture.com says the soundtrack with 12 songs is upholding the tradition of Coming to America as a fan-favorite. I think will be hearing what we call “Summer Jams” bumping in the car from this soundtrack. WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY? LINKS BELOW FOR: APPLE, GOOGLE, PANDORA, AND SPOTIFY.

Episode #83 - Wonderful Women IN UNIFORM Wednesday – We celebrate First Black Female Brigade Commander 21 Years Old Sydney Barber and Philadelphia’s First Black Female Firefighter Battalion Chief 39 Years Old Lisa Forrest (BLACK LADIES IN UNIFORM BEING THE 1ST). Both women had two different career goals before they landed in these historic roles, and both care about giving back to the community and making a difference. They are perfect examples of uplifting little girls into believing they can break the gender barrier.
At age 21, Sydney Barber who grew up in Lake, Forrest, IL will become the first Black woman to serve as brigade commander at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. She hopes to ‘open the door’ for those behind her. 'I Have The Heart To Do It'. She is quoted as saying in a recent interview "I never wanted to join the Navy growing up," she said, laughing. Her father is a graduate of the Naval Academy, and Barber said, "Everything, everywhere, any time, was all about Navy this, Navy that." She wanted to "write her own path" but kept returning to her "drive for wanting to pursue a career of service, no matter what I did. I wanted to give back to the world."
At age 39, Lisa Forrest grew up in Mount Airy and attended Penn State to study nursing but left after a year to join the Army. Six months into her service, Forrest was sidelined by an injury and honorably discharged. At 4-foot-10 and 99 pounds when she entered the Philadelphia Fire Academy in 2003, Lisa Forrest faced scrutiny from some male cadets and instructors who doubted her ability. She responds by saying “But they didn’t know I came from a strong family and a strong line of women.”
Sydney grew up in Lake FORREST and we're celebrating Lisa FORREST look at that commonality! WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO SAY? LINKS BELOW FOR: APPLE, GOOGLE, PANDORA, AND SPOTIFY.
